Blatchford - committed to sustainability
Earth Day is a reminder that progress comes through consistent action not just big commitments, but the everyday decisions that move us towards a more sustainable future. At Blatchford, that mindset is central to how we operate. To mark the day, we sat down with Ryan Senior, Head of HSE & Facilities, to share an honest and encouraging update on our journey towards net zero.

A year of measurable progress
Ryan began by highlighting a milestone that reflects the impact of our collective efforts: we’ve achieved a 21% reduction in carbon emissions compared with our baseline year. This isn’t just a number; it’s evidence that the changes we’re making across our sites are delivering real, measurable results. It shows that our strategy is working and that we’re firmly on the right path.
Zero Scope 2 emissions: a major achievement
One of the key drivers of this progress has been our transition to green energy across all UK Blatchford-controlled sites. This shift has enabled us to reduce our Scope 2 emissions to zero, a significant achievement that strengthens our position in our industry. It demonstrates what’s possible when operational decisions align with long-term environmental goals.
Waste reduction that makes a difference
Waste management has also seen significant improvement. Through our partnership with Go Green, we’ve introduced new processes and tools that are already delivering results. The can crusher in Sheffield and the consolidation of waste streams in Basingstoke are practical examples that improve waste segregation, reduce contamination, and increase efficiency. These initiatives show how small adjustments can have a meaningful impact when applied consistently across operations.
“What we do today doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be done better tomorrow.”
People powering progress
Ryan was clear that none of this progress would be possible without our teams' engagement. Their enthusiasm, particularly in Sheffield, where the can crusher has been wholeheartedly embraced, reflects a culture willing to challenge old habits and explore new ideas. As Ryan put it, “What we do today doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be done better tomorrow.” That mindset is becoming a powerful driver of innovation across the business.

Looking ahead with purpose
The next phase of our sustainability journey will focus on facility efficiency, employee-led initiatives, and further opportunities to reduce waste and emissions. Ryan emphasised that we’ll continue challenging existing processes and seeking smarter, more sustainable ways of working. Earth Day is a moment to celebrate progress, but it’s also a reminder that our journey continues and that we’re committed to pushing forward.
