Which K-Level are you?

During a mobility assessment, a prosthetist will look at an amputee's static & dynamic sitting, as well as asking them to perform standing activities and show their walking gait. Understanding your K-Level is the first step to knowing which product is going to be best suited for you.

Carousel K1

K1

K1 patients typically have lower mobility, but with the potential for walking on level surfaces, at a fixed speed. Often described by clinicians as 'household ambulators', K1 patients prefer to sit rather than stand whenever possible and may use a wheelchair for anything requiring more than a few steps on their prosthesis.
Carousel K2

K2

K2 patients are moderately mobile, with the ability to traverse low-level barriers such as curbs, stairs, or uneven surfaces. K2 patients, although still limited in their ability, are more able to get out and about in their community but may require the use of a walking aid or stick.
Carousel K3 Combined

K3

If your prosthetist considers you a K3 level walker, it means that you have the ability, or potential, to handle most everyday environments, like walking on sidewalks, steps, ramps, or uneven ground. You may even take part in exercise or hobbies that require more than just basic walking.
Carousel K4

K4

K4 patients have the ability to move at a level beyond everyday walking. You can take part in higher-impact or more demanding activities that require extra energy, strength, and endurance. This level is typical for children, active adults, or athletes who enjoy running, sports, or other vigorous physical activities.

Children

Children are generally more active than adults and unless there are reasons why their mobility is not expected to improve, their prosthetist would usually prescribe them with a K4 device.

Are prosthetics covered by medical insurance?

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers prosthetic devices needed to replace a body part or function when a Medicare-enrolled doctor or other health care provider orders them. For Medicare to pay for your prosthetic device, you must go to a Medicare-enrolled supplier. This is true no matter who submits the claim (you or the provider).

Medicaid

Medicaid will cover the cost of an artificial leg due to a disability if a physician or healthcare provider states that it's medically necessary. Medicaid programs don't all cover prosthetic devices in the same way or to the same extent. The best way to see how your state handles this kind of coverage is to contact your local agency and ask about it.
